Effective March 5, 2015
This privacy policy explains how This I Believe, Inc. (TIB), a Kentucky-based non-profit organization, collects and uses information about visitors to these web pages. We recognize the value of personal privacy and wish to protect your information.
When you visit our site, our web server (like all other web servers) automatically recognizes your IP address, what browser you are using, and certain other information (such as the date and time of your visit and a list of files downloaded or viewed). Our web server does not automatically collect personally identifiable information, such as your name or address. We use the information that is collected automatically by our web server to analyze how traffic flows at thisibelieve.org, but no one can contact or identify you from this information.
TIB places a standard “cookie” file on your computer to more accurately count the number of visitors and track activity on our website. A cookie is a string of code that can be placed onto your hard drive to enable a website to recognize your preferences when you are using the TIB website. Users have a choice of allowing the cookie to remember these kinds of preferences or typing them each time they visit the site. A cookie can also remember which pages you have visited on the TIB website. Cookies used by TIB do not store any personal information about you.
TIB collects personally identifying information such as your name, e-mail address, address, and age range on these pages only if you choose to provide that information to us. TIB asks you to provide this information when you submit an essay, create a registration profile, ask a comment or question about the project, or request additional information about our activities. TIB also may ask you to provide additional personal information in other limited circumstances specified at the time the information is requested.
TIB limits the use of personally identifying information to the following activities: responding to your e-mails; processing your essay submission for public archives; broadcast, podcast, or publication by TIB or its affiliates and partners; listing name and location (city, state, and/or country) information provided by you when broadcasting or publishing your essay, e-mails, or other submissions; editorial purposes such as contacting users for an online survey; sending communications, including marketing and promotional communications, from TIB to users who have not ‘opted out’ of the receipt of such communications; other internal TIB purposes; and other purposes specified at the time the information is gathered.
Personally identifying information collected by TIB is not shared with other third parties unless the user specifically consents to such distribution.
TIB also may disclose personal information if required to do so by law or if we believe that such action is necessary to (a) comply with the law or with legal process, (b) protect against misuse or unauthorized use of the TIB website, or (c) protect the personal safety or property of TIB website users, the public, or TIB and its employees. If you do not want your personally identifying information to be collected or used for any of these purposes, you can simply ‘opt out’ according to the process described below.
You must be at least eighteen (18) years old in order to submit an essay, subscribe to our newsletter, or make a donation. If you are age twelve (12) or younger, please do not submit any information about yourself to the TIB website, including your name, address, or email address. If you are age twelve (12) or younger and wish to submit an essay, please ask your parent or guardian to do so on your behalf, using their personally identifiable information. If we discover that we have collected any personally identifiable information from a child aged twelve (12) or younger, we will promptly remove that information from our server. Visitors between the ages of thirteen (13) and eighteen (18) must obtain permission from a parent or guardian before using any aspect of the TIB website or submitting any personally identifiable information to the TIB website. Approval of a parent or guardian will be verified before any broadcast or other distribution of an essay.
The TIB web pages contain links to other sites that may not follow the same privacy policies as TIB. These sites may use cookies, collect data, and use the data in ways that we would not. TIB is not responsible for the privacy practices or any information or materials on these other sites.
TIB’s third-party e-commerce partners (including PayPal and Stripe) will ask you to provide information necessary to process and service your donation or purchase, including your name, billing address, telephone number, email address, and credit card number. Credit card information is never seen by members of our staff and is not stored on our server. It is only seen by the staff of the third-party partner that processes the transaction and is stored on their secure servers.
TIB ensures that third parties that handle financial and other private information have aggressive security measures in place to protect against the loss, misuse, or alteration of information that has been collected from you at our site.
TIB reserves the right to change this policy. Any changes to this policy will be posted to this page as soon as reasonably possible, so please check this page periodically. Use of these pages constitutes consent to any policy then in effect.
If you have any questions or comments concerning our privacy policy; would like to change, update, or delete your personal information; or would like to opt-out of any future communications, please contact us or send a letter to:
