Being random is when you say a word or phrase irrelevant to the subject at hand. I believe in being random. Whether it is a thought or an idea it can either instantly change your day for the better. If you are random you can instantly change the mood for all.
It is the worst day possible for the kids in a language class. It is the day you rue for a month afterward. It scares the socks off of all the students. Getting grades back in Spanish is always a day for worry just like this one. You could feel the tension in the air. In class the older girl I sat next to was holding her head in her hands with her crumpled paper on her desk trying desperately not to look at the crumpled wad that looked like a red pen exploded all over it.
“Oh no” I could hear her groan. It was because of her failing test grade. So I went and when we had to read the vocabulary out loud I did the best thing I could think of. I become random. So I said aloud the first word I say which happened to be ensalda de frutas (or fruit salad). She cracked up and was holding a stich in her side. She could not stop laughing and neither could I. It was not just us. Several people tried not to but failed miserably and laughed also. And who did not laugh, they just smiled. It instantly improved every single person’s mood and for the first time Spanish ended way too quickly.
It showed the power of being random. She was very upset about her grade and I helped her feel better. Did it change her grade? No, but it did show her that it was not the end of the world. She can fix her grade and have fun doing it. It can help anyone rain or shine. Some believe being random is a waste of other people’s time, but it is not. Instead it can instantly make your day better. No matter what happened you can always make it better.
