Hitting The Sack

The year was 1972. A thought occurred to two men in Oregon City, Oregon. They made the decision to kick a small bag back and forth, and thus, Hacky Sack, or Footbagging, was born. This sport wasn’t an original idea. Many Asian countries had similar sports such as Jianzi, Jae gi cha gi, and Sipa. Although the idea wasn’t new, it remains timeless. Hacky Sack is a simple sport in which a person or group of people try to keep a small bag off the ground using their feet. I believe that Footbagging is a great sport that provides great entertainment, doesn’t break your bank, and is easily played and practiced.

Why do we play sports? Some people join sports for the attention. Others play for the exercise. In general, people play sports because simply because they have fun. Hacky Sack is a sport that can keeps me entertained for hours. It doesn’t require too much effort, so I don’t get tired too quickly. Time seems to fly when I play this sport. It can be very time consuming, which helps to keep me from getting bored. I’ve never been much good at sports, even though I’ve played since a young age. I was always stuck in the positions that were simple because I was no good. Consequently, I haven’t grown too fond of playing sports. I avoided them altogether for a good many years, but then I found out about Hacky Sack. I wasn’t very good at this sport right away, but it didn’t take me long to start making progress. Some people play sports for all the wrong reasons, but I play my sport because I have fun.

After all of the math is done, some sports can cost a fortune. They require gear, uniforms, and an area to play in. One of the great things about Footbagging is that is costs so little. All you need to play is a bag and some shoes. Footbags range from a couple of bucks to the high teens, and almost every kid has a pair of shoes. Consequently, Hacky Sack is a very cheap sport. This is a great opportunity for kids who are too young to get a job, too broke to afford other sports, or caught up in other bills they need to pay. As a college student, I love the inexpensiveness of this sport. I have had my Hacky Sack for almost two years, and it is still in decent shape. Some sports can cost a lot of money, but I haven’t paid a cent for months.

Easy entertainment seems to be the illusive light at the end of the tunnel for kids these days. We constantly hear them saying how bored they are, even though there is a world of fun out there. Humans have an addiction to entertainment, and video games seem to be merely a temporary fix. The problem is that much of the youth today is too lazy to get up, go out, and play. If only more people knew about Hacky Sack. It is a very relaxed sport that is easy to learn and easy to play. Many people who have tried Footbagging complain that they are not very good. They just don’t realize that Hacky Sack, like many other skills, requires some time in the beginning in order to get the hang of it. Once a footbagger gets past that phase of awkward clumsiness with the bag, they will quickly get much better. I had my awkward phase when I started. I couldn’t kick the bag once, so obviously I couldn’t keep it off the ground. After practicing a few hours over time, I was able to kick it a couple times. Since then, I’ve only gotten better. Along with being easy to learn, this sport is also easy to practice. You can do it almost anywhere at almost any time. Practicing doesn’t require a big area; it only requires enough room to kick. This sport can also be practiced both alone and with others. Personally, I prefer to play in groups, but if I’m bored and alone, I’ll pull out the bag for a few kicks. After all these things are considered, Hacky Sack is quite a simple sport.

When I started Hacky Sack, I was like many others. I didn’t like it because I wasn’t good. I saw nothing significant about it. I just saw people kicking a bag around, yet I still got this intrigued feeling deep inside me. I wanted to learn, and I wanted to get good. I have been playing Hacky Sack for a couple years now, and I don’t regret one minute of it. It is the only sport I have ever enjoyed. Footbagging may not be a life-changing experience, but it is a part of me that I would never want to give up. It keeps me entertained day after day, and it keeps me away from common boredom. Hacky Sacks are very inexpensive, so it’s an affordable hobby for me to have. It is an easy sport to play and I don’t need much to practice and play it. I believe that Hacky Sack is a great sport.
