You might think after hearing or reading this title that I am of the religious type, this is not so, I regularly suggest to others that I am religiously confused. However, I believe in that traditional Sunday when all or most of my family was home and we all relaxed or did an activity together. Sundays are the days when everyone should take a break from work, school, and the activities of Friday and Saturday nights. This is a chance to come together and relax as a family at home. I believe Sundays are the days memories of home are most prevalent from your childhood and should be continued.
I believe in that old type of Sunday when stores were closed and the only place you could buy anything was at the local convenience store. Where the bacon you had to have for dad’s perfect breakfast was seven dollars. Where that three dollar dusty jar of cranberry sauce resided just waiting for that customer to pick it up because it was the one forgotten item from the supermarket yesterday.
I believe that Sundays should be used as a family tool for gathering and planning the week ahead. A plan for mom and her meals of the week, a plan for dad and how to facilitate the next home project, a plan for picking up the little one from school on Wednesday, a plan for who’s going to let the dog out on Thursday night when everyone plans to arrive home late in the day.
I believe in sitting down at the table and having that traditional homemade Sunday morning breakfast where mom contemplates what kind of big fancy dinner she will feed the family at the end of the day. I believe in that famous cheese dip and chicken wing recipe for the Sunday football games that start at one o’clock and four o’clock sharp in the afternoon.
I believe in taking back the woods on Sundays during hunting season to explore the world around us. This is the chance to get close to nature where the woodpeckers hunt for bugs in the pine trees, and a soft wind catches a few branches just right to break the silence of the woods to get you to look in a different direction.
I believe in the Sunday traditions our family has established; whether it’s wearing matching Tom Brady jerseys all day with your little one and explaining the game of football to your wife, taking a family bike ride downtown, or simply grabbing that book you were looking forward to reading, or maybe even that brook trout you didn’t catch on a Sunday ice fishing trip while playing on the ice.
Sundays in our family just recently became even more of a tradition since our six year old beloved border collie we named Brady passed away. My daughter Lily and I now have a tradition of wearing our matching Patriots football jerseys on Sundays for two reasons; to root for our favorite football team and to remember our dog Brady.
