I believe that all American citizens should vote because it is the greatest freedom that we have. Although I am not 18 years old yet, as soon as my birthday rolls around, I will have my voice heard and my vote counted in every election that is held in my town. It deeply saddens me that many people do not take advantage of this wonderful opportunity that we have as citizens of a democratic country. By having this great freedom, we are one of the most fortunate countries in the world.
Ever since I was a young child, my parents have instilled in me the belief of how important it is for all American citizens to vote. I think that many people do not realize how lucky we are to live in a country where we actually have the freedom to choose our leaders. There are so many other countries in the world that are run by dictators or by people who were born into their leadership positions. In these countries, the citizens are not allowed to choose their leaders, and sometimes they could face grave consequences if they spoke out against their leaders. In some other countries that do vote, the ballots are not justly counted, and often times the citizens who vote can’t vote for who they really want because of the risk of being arrested or injured. In comparison to the citizens of other countries, America has it easy when it comes to choosing our leaders.
The best thing about America is that it is a country run by its citizens. American citizens have the opportunity to choose who leads us by a democratic system, meaning the majority wins and this is why it is so important for everyone to vote. Many people use the excuse that just one vote will not count, but that is not true at all! What if everybody decided on Election Day that they were not going to vote because “just one vote does not matter”? Every vote adds up, and it is vital that American citizens have their voice heard. I often hear people that are eligible to vote, but choose not to, complain about political problems. If we do not vote, then we have no right to complain about the decisions that our leaders make. I believe that we are incredibly lucky to live in a democratic country where we have the opportunity to make informed decisions by voting. If we do not use our freedom to vote, we have no say in the future of our lives, and the future of country.
