When deciding on a career, I knew I had to search deep down into my thoughts about what kind of person I am. A few words that I thought of were dedicated, genial, and compassionate. These three characteristics led me to my decision of becoming a nurse. In relation to the nursing profession, I have a core belief that having dedication, geniality, and compassion can be the most important qualities to exhibit when a person is going into this field.
All throughout my school career I have pushed myself to do the best that I could do. I have always done my work and received good grades. I even became salutatorian of my high school class. In relation to my work habits, I have never been late and have always committed myself to any task that was asked of me. To me, this demonstrates that I am dedicated. Like any other professional, a nurse cannot be late for work. A nurse is responsible, and fulfills his or her duty the whole time he or she is at work. In the nursing profession, having dedication is crucial.
Working in a hospital all day with sick patients can take a toll on anyone, but if a nurse is able to stay positive, approachable, and friendly to patients, he or she is doing his or her job effectively. I believe that having geniality in the nursing profession is a significant attribute to possess. Being warm and cheerful to the oldest or sickest of patients sometimes can make an elder’s day. It is important even in the most difficult and tough situations for the nurses to retain their geniality in regards to the patient’s well being.
Compassion is probably the most important quality to have when becoming a nurse. When dealing with dying patients and their families on a daily basis, nurses need to know how to sympathize and show compassion to those who are grieving. For some this is not an easy task, and it takes time and experience for them to learn how to show empathy. I have always been an understanding and caring person to those in distress. Just recently my grandmother had been in the hospital. From our hometown, to Bangor, to even a women’s hospital in Boston, I either visited or kept in close contact with my grandmother. I knew she was having a hard time being away from her home and our family. I got to experience the toughness she was going through, in which my compassion was able to shine through. While helping individuals as a nurse can be one of the most rewarding jobs on earth, nursing certainly has its disadvantageous aspects as well. Not every day is going to be great. By possessing the trait of compassion, a nurse will definitely feel better when having to deal with the negative side of this profession.
Having just one of these three characteristics certainly can make anyone a good nurse, but by demonstrating all three of these characteristics sets up the potential for an individual to become a great nurse. To some, it comes naturally, while to others it comes in time. In conclusion, I strongly believe that together, dedication, geniality, and compassion are three very important qualities to possess in relation to the nursing profession.
