I believe in many things, but probably one of the most important things in which I believe is equality. Equality, as I like to define it, is the state of being equal and accepted by all, regardless of race, gender, religion, or any other factor. I believe that equality and acceptance of all will only result in a better world as a whole.
Not only do I believe in equality, I believe in the power of equality; I believe in what universal equality will do for not only those newly being accepted, but for the earth in general. Once equality is established in one area, it can be seen as a primary example for other places that currently do not believe in equality. Since the civil rights movement in the sixties has established equality for African-Americans, our nation has become much more peaceful, and we have learned to accept others for how they are, regardless of their appearance.
Although I have not experienced a situation where I was treated unfairly for a reason related to religion firsthand, I find that I relate to those who experience undeserved hatred because of an insignificant reason. For example, I am one of those people who while reading books regarding the Holocaust cry about the injustice of the whole situation. I assume that I react this way while others don’t is simply the fact that I have been brought up to accept everyone, regardless of their beliefs.
I am also a big believer in equal rights for women. This belief probably stems from the fact that while I was younger, I was teased by some boys in my class saying that just because I was a girl, I couldn’t play kickball on their team because they didn’t want to lose. To the boys’ team’s dismay, I joined the other team and we ended up winning that particular game during recess. I am older now and have learned more since that experience about how women were, and still are in some areas, treated insufficiently because of their gender. I am thankful that women have come such a long way over the years and am proud to be one.
Equality is an important thing in not only our country, but our world as well. I believe that with equality we can get as far as we can dream.
