With a few exceptions, I’m pretty sure that everyone in the US has had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I used to be one of those exceptions.
I used to be allergic to peanut butter. It wasn’t life threatening, but it stunk, especially for a four year old who had just begun to experience the joys of the world (which includes a PB&J sandwich). In preschool, when I went to a special lunch group for kids whose parents worked, no one could bring peanut butter anything. Then, it all changed. At just five years old, I was tested for my allergy yet again. The results turned out negative. Hooray! After some follow up tests, the decision was made; I was to have my first peanut butter and jelly sandwich. It was very yummy. But something wasn’t quite right; the peanut butter was fine, the jelly was sweet, it was the bread. Wheat bread, I believe that peanut butter and jelly is just too sweet for wheat bread.
Everyday, from grade 1 to grade 4, I would always buy my lunch. They were easy, and even a little bit delicious. Tacos, Mac-n-cheese, chicken noodle soup, hamburgers, I liked them all. Except on Friday, when the most dreaded pizza was for lunch. But I would still buy lunch; I would just get peanut butter and jelly, on white bread. In my opinion, that was much better than pizza. But of course, my mom just had to be healthy. Whenever I had peanut butter and jelly at home, it just wasn’t as good.
I get that its good to be healthy and it helps you stay fit but that’s what exercising is for. Is eating like a rabbit really going to do any good? Think about it. I believe that it’s ok to be fit and healthy, but I also believe in eating non-healthy food.
I tried for years, month after month, almost every week; I would ask my mom, “Why?” “It’s not good for you,” she would say, “too many calories and too much sugar.” It was painful work. It took 7 years, but finally, just about a month ago, my mom got white bread. The color like light cream, thick, fluffy goodness. That same goodness, that some of my other friends had everyday. It was a very special moment for my whole family. The third best Saturday of my life, so far. I had never been happier to help my mom put away the groceries.
I believe that if you want to be skinny and healthy, go to a gym or exercise regularly. It probably won’t help your image to eat at Mc. Donald’s everyday, but it is okay to enjoy bread that doesn’t taste like cardboard for lunch. Even though white bread isn’t the healthiest thing in the world just have a little bit more peanut butter on the sandwich. In the end, it will all balance out just perfect.
