Most everyone has seen or pictured the guy that gets stuck holding the door for an endless flow of people. Constantly coming never stopping like raging river, but even though being nice can be annoying it is worth it. I believe chivalry is not dead; there is a little niceness in everyone. When were nice it always comes back around in return, and people seem to be nicer to us.
There are many ways I convey niceness: opening doors for people, giving people compliments, being friendly, or even just smiling. I can always tell who is not that nice, for example if I open the door for someone, and they do not even say thank. It is a good thing everyone is not like that because it would be one sad world. Another way to come off as nice is to be fair and honest with people. Some take niceness for advantage however, and that is a big drawback it seems.
An old saying that kind of contradicts the belief in chivalry is that nice guys always finish last, and that is not entirely true. Being nice to people almost always comes back around. A lot of people have been broke down on the side of the road, and that saint comes along to save the day. It is a good feeling when we get help in times of need, so that is the feeling we can give others when we are nice. Back in the dark ages the knights were well known for being kind to all, even to evil to some extent. In doing so they were well respected, and held in high regard. In essence if we are nice, people will respect us more. Also being a gentleman helps get a favor or two. It can also have some negative aspects as well.
I have implemented this concept of chivalry into my life as much as possible. Going as far as putting my coat over a puddle for a girl to walk on is a little steep, but other things like doors and compliments are more manageable. My parents tried to beat this into my head early on in life, but it was worth their efforts.
After it is all said and done, being nice or chivalrous not only benefits us, but others as well. Niceness always comes back around in the end when in time of need, and people will like us more. I think if there were more people that cared about this topic the world would be a better place for it. So that is why chivalry is something that I believe in.
