Last Sunday I was sitting in the living room with my husband, who was watching football games. While I was sitting there reading the newspaper the television began to ring out the national anthem. I looked up at the screen to see the American flag being brought out, signaling the start of the football game. As an American and a veteran of the military, I was saddened at what I saw. Many of the football players and spectators didn’t seem to even flinch when the National Anthem began to play as the flag was brought out; they just continued to do as they were doing. Many just stood there, while others talked to the person next to them. Did they not know what they were supposed to do, or did they even care? Our nation’s flag has come to mean so much to me, and it is very upsetting when others cannot seem to take a moment and think about the sacrifices others have made so they can continue to enjoy their everyday freedoms.
I did not always understand the significance of our nation’s flag. Prior to joining the Air Force I only knew what I was taught in school about showing respect for the American flag. Through the years I learned what the flag truly means. Every time I see the flag, I think about the sacrifices made by many who wore the military uniform before me to ensure our freedom.
There was a time when I was on a tour in Iraq and found myself on an aircraft bound for Kuwait. During this trip we were diverted back into Iraq to pick up three passengers. Upon landing, we were told we were picking up three service members who didn’t make it. The three flag-draped coffins were placed in the back of the aircraft. After the plane took off, each of us seventeen passengers took a turn walking to the back of the aircraft to show our respect. When it was my turn, I knelt at each casket saying a prayer for my fellow brother or sister service member. Even though I did not know their names, I will always hold them close in my heart. They sacrificed their life to help maintain our freedom that many take for granted.
I am now retired from the Air Force, but every time I see Old Glory flying freely in the wind, I snap to attention and say a prayer for the service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and for all those still fighting for our country. With the wars the United States is involved in right now, I think most people in this country at least know someone who is in the military or is a veteran. I just wish we could all learn to show a little respect and take a moment when Old Glory is present and think about what she represents: Freedom and Sacrifices.
