I believe music has a very possessive nature that has the power to take over anyone at any time. It has a way of helping me express myself when words fail. There is a certain type of music for any mood; angry, sad, in love, or happy. I find comfort in music. It brings me away from the reality of the world and into the confinements of my soul. I believe music has the power to create the feeling I desire, to lift my spirits, and calm my emotions. It has the power to make people feel closer to others and bring people, even nations, together on a common ground. When people play music, they let their emotions take control, expressing their feelings through lyrics and sound.
Often, those who share their music with me can make me relate to their lyrics as closely as they do to the person who created them. There is a song for every emotion, a genre of music for almost all nationalities, even songs that record history, like the protest songs of the sixties. With music, I can look back in time and see the world through the songwriter’s perspective. It gives me a better understanding and helps explain history. It can connect me to a certain place, like where I was when I first heard a particular song on the radio, and I was with that special person to share that moment with me. Music would be hard not to relate that song to that specific moment.
Folk singer Pete Seeger said, “Music can make you feel like you’re not quite so helpless,†which I find to be very true. There is always music to help me celebrate, help me through a rough time, when an important even occurs in my life, or just to keep me company when I need it the most.
Ask yourself this: how would the world be without music? It’s hard to imagine because music is in our lives, helping us get through every day, one song at a time. I know music has let me express my feelings in ways I would never imagine possible, and I think my life would be very silent without it. I believe having music helps express who I am, takes me into the depths of my soul, and tells a story through song. It’s pretty hard not to believe in music.
