I believe in reading for pleasure. Reading is a large part of my life because I find respite from life’s challenges in the stories that I read. Whether it is historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, or mystery; the different kinds of stories that books provide me have enriched my life and entertained me since I was six years old.
Reading is something that I enjoy because it helps me in many different ways. I enjoy reading because I am the most relaxed when I am reading. I can immerse myself in the story and the trials of the characters. My own problems and the stress I feel are forgotten when I read about a hero who is trying to defeat an evil antagonist. Reading has helped me develop into who I am today because of the different lessons that can be found within a story. Whether that lesson is about grammar, vocabulary, or even moral issues, I am still learning a lot of things from books. To me, reading is about learning and relaxing, and it has helped me since I was a little kid.
My interest in reading developed when I started reading larger, more advanced books without the help of my parents. The first book series that I read when I was younger was by an author named Brain Jacques. He wrote books about a mythical place called Redwall where there were animals living in society and working together. In Redwall, all animals were equal and very successful, but were also extremely happy and friendly. In addition to the happiness in the books, there was also fighting which made the books even more appealing to me. Jacques includes in his stories epic battles between forces of good and evil. He described fights between large armies standing for freedom fighting against cruel vermin who kill for pleasure. Although nothing like that has happened in my life, the examples of noble characters battling cruel ones influenced me in many ways. The concepts of good versus evil are something that is prevalent in every decision that I make, because of the books I read. Am I doing the right thing? How will my decisions affect the people around me? These are questions that come to my mind every time I say or do something. I am more aware of what is moral and what is not because of the books I have read.
Not only does reading help me advance in many ways, but it is also fun. I feel the same sense of excitement while reading, as I do playing in an intense sports game or watching a movie that I love. Overall, reading has helped develop my imagination and my creativity. Both are important facets of who I am and how I think. I believe that reading has made me a better person and has helped me escape reality to a place where I don’t have to worry. That is why I believe in reading for pleasure.
