The “Little Black Dress” was originally made in the 1920’s by the fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Chanel intended the garment to be long lasting, versatile, affordable, and accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color (Nellie). Because of Chanel, the black dress has become the “Epitome of Fashion.” Without Coco Chanel’s inspirations, we would not have a classic garment to wear to any occasion that comes our way. “She didn’t merely create new fashion—she created a new look, a new way for women to see themselves (Everton).”

Before Coco Chanel introduced it as a fashion color, black was primarily used for mourning. Traditionally, it is still respectful to wear black to a funeral. The same dress that was once the highlight of my workday now becomes a sign of respect at a very formal ceremony. The little black dress is a no-fail option. By wearing this classic garment, a woman can show respect and look beautiful at the same time. Funerals are never easy, but that simple black dress will never make choosing an outfit a difficult task ever again.

There are so many different styles of the dress, that it essentially looks fabulous on anyone. “It knows no social, style or size boundaries. Whether it costs $1,000 or $50 is a size 2 or a size 22, it is still a little black dress. And everyone wants to own at least one perfect little black dress” (Nellis). In addition, Accessories are a very important and necessary tool that can be used to add a little “Pop of Color” into your outfit. A simple black dress will allow you to look perfect for that perfect night.
Although the original “little black dress” has evolved over time to become what women all over the world today our wearing, the true essence of the dress remains the same. It is simple, adaptable, and stunning. Chanel’s black dress allowed women to expand their fashion senses. People learned that less is more and that a simple dress can make them look stunning.
