Little Black Dress

I shifted through the racks of clothing in the retail store, searching for the perfect outfit. The essential item of clothing that will bridge the gap between formal and informal. The article of clothing that is versatile and can be worn to many diverse occasions. Is their a garment in this world that can withstand the workplace and a night out on the town? Searching through the endless quantities of clothing, I suddenly stumbled upon the answer I was looking for. The little black dress that lay in my hands forces a little smile on my lips. I knew this dress would be perfect, perfect for any occasion that came my way. As a woman, it is extremely important to dress appropriately for all occasions. Therefore, what more does a girl need then a simple black dress that keeps her looking classy and sophisticated without over doing it. Day-to-day people are judged based upon the types of clothing that they wear. We associate the way we feel about ourselves with the clothes that we dress in. I feel that every woman deserves to look her best. Every girl deserves to feel her best. Every girl needs a simple black dress in her closet.

The “Little Black Dress” was originally made in the 1920’s by the fashion designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. Chanel intended the garment to be long lasting, versatile, affordable, and accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral color (Nellie). Because of Chanel, the black dress has become the “Epitome of Fashion.” Without Coco Chanel’s inspirations, we would not have a classic garment to wear to any occasion that comes our way. “She didn’t merely create new fashion—she created a new look, a new way for women to see themselves (Everton).”

In the workplace, it is essential for a woman to look sophisticated and chic. A simple black dress can show superiority and elegance, allowing a woman to feel successful in her surrounding environment. In order for a person to be taken seriously in the workplace, they must be approachable and professionally dressed. A girl can simply not go wrong wearing a black dress in the workplace. No matter what type of job a woman has a black dress can always come in handy, whether it be for an interview, a get together with co-workers, or jus a day- to-day outfit, the little black dress says no more about a girl than “Classy”.

Before Coco Chanel introduced it as a fashion color, black was primarily used for mourning. Traditionally, it is still respectful to wear black to a funeral. The same dress that was once the highlight of my workday now becomes a sign of respect at a very formal ceremony. The little black dress is a no-fail option. By wearing this classic garment, a woman can show respect and look beautiful at the same time. Funerals are never easy, but that simple black dress will never make choosing an outfit a difficult task ever again.

Although the original “little black dress” has evolved over time to become what women all over the world today our wearing, the true essence of the dress remains the same. It is simple, adaptable, and stunning. Chanel’s black dress allowed women to expand their fashion senses. People learned that less is more and that a simple dress can make them look stunning. Even 80 years later, women all over the world have been wearing classic black dresses while looking classy and sophisticated. Theses dresses will never go out of style and will forever be a necessity in a woman’s wardrobe. Every girl needs a simple black dress in her closet. With this timeless piece of clothing, you will feel the best about yourself and will always have a striking outfit to wear.
