Unconditional love is thought to be an element of fairy tales, something that could never exist amongst the hatred and atrocities of today. Unconditional love, a selfless sacrifice, is something so rare that it’s beautiful. It’s something that I have been blessed to experience and am therefore living proof of its existence.
When I was five years old, my mother and step father separated because my mother’s drug use was out of control. There was, of course, no doubt about where we would go because we knew that my grandmother would be waiting with an open door and open arms. It was with her I would stay from that day forward. My Grandmother is a simple woman in the sense that she has lived a fairly conventional life, however, on the inside, she possesses a rare gift; the unconditional love for her family. My mother, to this day, never could get her addiction under control and is constantly in and out of my life. It was the unreliability of my mother that brought me to the realization that my grandmother was my only constant. This recognition only grew stronger over time to the point where I now know that no matter what happens in my life or who I chose to love, the only person I can count on no matter what, and who will love me regardless, is the woman who opened her door to me thirteen years ago and never looked back.
Although, as a child and teenager, I didn’t always appreciate her kindness, sacrifice, and unconditional love; I believe that I fully grasp it now. My grandmother wanted the best of everything for me and made sure that I never went without, even though her resources were limited. While I sat there and questioned why I couldn’t have a “normal family” she was working full-time to secure my well-being and ensure my needs and wants were met. She bent over backwards and put in double the effort of “normal parents” to make certain that I had everything I needed to be a “normal little girl”. My grandmother put everything she had into raising me the absolute best she could. She is still the one, to this day, to make sure I’m okay and have everything I need. When she took me in, she decided right then and there to take responsibility for my life, upbringing, and happiness. I am eternally grateful for her unconditional love and it’s something that I try to learn from her every day.
I believe in the existence of unconditional love. I believe that you have to feel it in order to believe it. Feeling unconditional love is an enviable thing, an experience that empowers you. Loving unconditionally should be endeavored by all, because receiving it is the absolute most rewarding and inspiring gift I have ever received.
