To think about what I believe is not exactly the easiest thing to do, especially when it involves thinking about one belief that has brought me to where I am and is going to take me into the future. It is not something that I have ever thought deeply enough about, but after giving it some thought, I have been able to pinpoint something I believe in.
I believe in living one day at a time. I have been though a lot of hard times just like anyone else in the world. I have moved 14 times, had my parents’ divorce right before my teenage years, and had both parents remarry. I have taken care of my mom during rough times, including a time when she was almost blind because a firework struck her in the face. I have lost my great-grandfather, grandfather, uncle, cousin, three best friends, and a 10-year-old stepsister who was killed just two years ago. For me this is enough, yet I know that there are so many people out there that have it much worse and would trade lives with me any day.
If it was not for me telling myself to take it one day at a time, then I would probably not be where I am today. It has taken a lot of strength and commitment for me to push through the bad times and look forward to the good. This needs be something that everyone does in life. Even if someone’s life is carefree they need to live one day at I time because tomorrow may not be there.
I have seen firsthand how quickly life can be taken away, and because of that I have told myself to cherish every second. Even if people have not experienced death, cherishing every moment should be practiced anyway. Living this way helps me focus on the tasks I need to complete that day, the beauty that is all around me, and the thankfulness I feel to be alive. We live in such a fast paced world that many people do not stop to cherish the moment they are in.
My goal in life is to help people take it one day at a time. I will help people slow down so that they can cherish and focus on what they are doing at the time. I will help people get through a rough time because they will know that as long as they take one day at a time, eventually the day will come when they will feel some relief. This is what has helped me and I know it can help others as well. This is the reason why I went into the field of human ecology and I know I will carry out the belief that has already taken me so far in life.
