This I Believe…
What do you do on Sunday mornings? What about Sunday afternoons and nights? Sunday morning I go to church and Sunday afternoons I go to a teen church group. Also, Sunday and Wednesday nights I go to my church’s youth group. I do not complain about it, but I take pride in it. I choose to go to all of these places. I go, not because I feel obligated to, but because I love to go. I have friends at all of these places and I have fun! I believe Church can be fun.
Christianity is most importantly the belief of Jesus Christ and that he gave his life for us, so we should live our life for him. Christianity is important to me and in my life, but I like things in my life to be happy and fun.
At my church I am allowed to wear anything from blue jeans to fancy dresses. Most people just wear casual clothes though. When I walk in, the band is playing fun, happy, loud praise and worship music. Our band consists of things like electric guitars, drums, other instruments, and singers. After the praise music there is a sermon or “lesson”. Then they pass around the offering baskets.
I really enjoy going to youth group, in all it is two hours long. On Sundays the first few minutes we have a short 10-15 minute worship time. Then we go into “smallgroups” sorted by gender and age where we discuss a topic chosen by the youth minister. The rest of the time, an hour, is called fellowship time. We talk and play foosball, ping pong, and just have fun. On Wednesday night we just play and then go to a baseball game, or maybe to get an ice cream, whatever we decide on.
I do not understand why going to church can often become an obligating place people “must” go. I think that growing spiritually while having fun is possible. For example, the last three years I have gone to Brazil on a mission trip to build a church for many less fortunate people. I also teach children stories from the bible and sing Christian songs in Portuguese for vacation bible school. I help a lot of of people while on these mission trips each year and I love doing it. It is also my summer vacation at the same time though.
Christianity can be fun and exciting without making me feel obligated that I have to go. With the combination of music, small groups, and mission trips church can really be enjoyed. Church can be fun, this I believe.
