My belief as to the origin of life was challenged. Science can assist in creating wonderful human beings. Prior to meeting my twin grandsons, who were placed into my daughter’s womb by in vitro fertilization, I had doubts about this procedure. My belief background had me at times question new scientific developments. Our daughter had breast cancer and went through a year of chemo and radiation. She then discussed having a family with her doctor. The doctor suggested that she try donor eggs because the radiation treatment had destroyed her eggs. My daughter went through many injections and anxiety hoping to get pregnant with the in vitro procedure. She was 36 years old and knew her time frame was limited.
Alas, she did become pregnant and was jubilant! Her doctor then informed her that there were three eggs involved and two were developing. He suggested that she have one expelled to insure the viability of the other one. Our daughter and her husband chose to have both embryos go full term. She had a C-section delivery and for several days seemed to do well. One week after their birth, she started to hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital for an emergency hysterectomy.
She had my support and her husband’s for two weeks to care for the twins, Michael and John. They were both healthy and demanded constant care. One was smaller and needed more assistance to suck from his bottle. The smaller son had surgery at age six months for an infection in his ureter. They both thrived and grew to be average for height and weight. My daughter also recovered, and is healthy and busy with two prospering boys. Michael and John will be three in October 2005. They are two unique human beings with different personalities. Their dad is very proud of his sons.
The scientific method of in vitro fertilization has changed my belief because I have witnessed two miracles develop. Michael and John are truly a gift to our family. They are busy, demanding and fun to be around. I hope that I can have an open mind for other scientific break-throughs as they are made available. Some how God must smile as more creative powers are accessible to us mere humans.
