This I Believe
I believe children have an undeniable bond to their parents no matter the circumstances. We’ve all heard of instances when a child has been adopted in a stable household but still have the yearning to meet their biological parents. Children who have been abused and still have the desire and want to be the abuser, their parents. Being a single mother is not easy, but if I could go back in time I wouldn’t change a thing. I believe that having a child is the greatest gift one can receive because my son is my responsibility, he loves me unconditionally, and I strive for perfection because of him.
My son is my responsibility and I’m reminded of that everyday. I gave birth to my son at the age of 16, so not only am I a single mom but I was also a teenage mom. When I was 16 I was very rebellious and out spoken. When I gave birth to my son I learned to be humble and most of all I learned to listen. I dropped out of high school in order work to provide the bare necessities for my son. When he is sick I’m his nurse, when his is hungry I’m his chef, and when he is confused I’m his friend. My son is in fact my responsibility however he is responsible for the woman I’ve become. He has showed me what love is.
My son loves me unconditionally and he shows me in everyway. I’ve made many mistakes in his lifetime, but he doesn’t care as long as he’s with me. Being a teenage mother I was selfish and self-centered. What brought me back to reality was the look in my child’s eyes when he asked me “when are you coming to pick me up?” With my mind telling to me lie to him, my heart told me to stay, so I did stay, and never looked back. My son doesn’t care about money or material things he just wants to be with his mom and because of this I strive to give him a better childhood than what I had.
I strive for better in life because of my son. When I’m tired he gives me pep talks saying things like “mommy you can do it,” when I feel depressed he refreshes my memory with his love. Growing up I didn’t have much so I work hard to give him the things I never had like the latest fashions, the latest video games, and all the things his heart desires. It breaks my heart to tell my son I can’t afford to buy him want he wants. My son is an honor roll student an amazing athlete I can’t refuse him. I give him what he wants, but he knows that he has to work for it.
With that said, not only is my son the greatest gift, but he is also the fuel to my fire, my reason for living. I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for him, he saved my life and because of him I can’t quit, and won’t quit. I’m a strong believer that you lead by example and I will lead my son by showing him rather than telling him. I’m confident in my son’s ability to succeed. Because of me my son knows he can be anything he wants to be with hard work, after all he has a great mother that supports him one hundred percent.
