This I Believe
I believe in the power of saints. The power to give someone a gift, advice, or even love without expecting or requiring thanks is a noble trait seen less and less in this modern world.
When I was fifteen years old I was asked if I wanted to be in a garage band by my friend Scott, and I was ecstatic that I could be in a band. I did not know how to play guitar, or really any other guitar related instrument. My step-dad and I started looking for a bass guitar, since that is what my friend Scott and I decided because he already owned a guitar, and I will always remember the day that my step-dad and I went to go pick up my ‘super’ deal as my dad put it.
We drove down to San Antonio, and it was quite a long drive as I remember because my dad would always drive five miles under the speed limit. He was a safe driver. We found the street that the guy’s apartment was on, and pulled into his complex. I remember I was nervous about going up to the door. My dad came with me and that made me feel better. The man opened the door after we knocked a couple of times. He said hello and that his name was Adam.
He then showed us the bass guitar and amp he was selling to us. It was in great condition and I was so amazed at the sight of it. I asked if I could hold it, and when I picked it up it was rather lighter than I thought it would be. I wanted to play something, but didn’t know how to play it yet; so I just looked at the guitar. Adam showed us the guitar, amplifier, gig bag, and distortion pedal that were all being sold to us for the sum of $60. Then that was a lot of money to me, so I didn’t see the significance of the ‘super’ deal in the manner that my dad did.
Over the years I played in three or four bands now and though my music has changed I still have that Memphis Bass with the TKO amp. I guess that once I get older and have a few bass guitars of my own, I can pass down my bass to the next kid who just wants to get started and play music. Looking back on those great memories of practicing, jamming, and shows makes me miss my step-dad that much more now that he is gone. He would be proud of me and what I was doing with the gift that he gave me, and I know that he is looking down above me saying, “Don’t give up, because with the talent you have, you can go anywhere and do anything.” I love you dad.
