I Believe in a Better World for Tomorrow
I am currently expecting my first child, Kyle David. I had not intended on having any children for many various reasons; the main one being that I did not think that the world would be a great place when they grew up to be my age. However, here I am…God had other plans.
I have worked in Education and non-profits for about 10 years and have always held a belief that through good works, we can all make a difference, albeit a small one compared to the big picture. On my resume, I include that I have a love of lifelong learning and a dream for a better world for tomorrow.
Yet, in my decision to not have children, I was basing that entire judgment on my pessimistic belief that we would NOT have a better world. How hypocritical, you say. As I sit here reading other essays, I realized that I, myself, was not being true to who I was and what I believe. I was just trying to take the easy road by not having to face this fact.
I have had many mentors in my life and one of the most influential had always told me,” Mistakes are simply opportunities to learn.” I have tried to remember this philosophy as I have lived my life. Taking a risk when it was not comfortable nor seemingly responsible to do so. I believe that through my actions we will have a better world for tomorrow for our children. I also hope that Kyle David will be able to see that mistakes are opportunities and stepping out of your comfort zone is what has helped make the world what it is today.
