I believe that nurses are the heart of the healthcare industry. As a senior in high school, I knew that going to nursing school was my passion and that I would do whatever it took to succeed and become accepted into nursing school. In beginning my nursing education, I have come to realize how wonderful the profession is and the joy of working with a variety of individuals and their specific cultural beliefs. In the nursing profession, it takes a special person to work with the everyday complications in healthcare and be able to adjust to those complications without having a long-term effect. Before beginning my nursing education, I viewed nurses as people who passed medications and followed doctor’s orders, but I soon realized that a nurse is more than just that. A nurse is a patient’s advocate, a listener, a teacher, and a mentor. Oftentimes, when a patient and family have a bad experience with a healthcare team, they see every other healthcare team the same way. As I grow into a fine nursing professional, I need to set high standards and prove that not every healthcare team has a negative attitude towards patient care. Nursing is similar to other professions, but as a nursing student, I work with patients on a very personal basis and I have to establish a positive rapport with that patient in order to succeed successfully in patient care.
As a nursing student, I have begun to realize that one on one nursing care plays an important role in successful patient care. Nurses contribute highly in the healthcare field as the eyes and ears of the patient’s physician. As a future nurse, I am concerned with seeing that each and every patient is taken care of equally and that I do whatever it takes to ensure that each and every patient is satisfied with his or her healthcare experience. In completing past clinical experiences, I have observed that patient’s enjoy and appreciate that I want to sit and listen to what they have to say and they enjoy the positive feedback and suggestions that I can give them. I believe that establishing a positive rapport with each patient that I come in contact with will help better my nursing care with that patient and patient’s family.
I believe the nursing profession is a very rewarding and joyful profession to be in. Nursing has made a positive impact in the healthcare team and I, one day, will be able to contribute to that legacy. As a future nurse, I look forward to working with various cultures and being able to set a positive role model image for the profession itself, as well as, for future nurses to come.
