Something about the way Ellen Degeneres smiles makes me incapable of resisting a smile, too. Anyone who has ever seen her show knows her fun-loving and confident presence. The woman radiates self-confidence and good feelings. She embodies my belief that true beauty comes from within and that to achieve beauty constitutes a personal journey, not an outward transformation. Anyone can achieve beauty by following three simple beauty tips: accessorize, compliment, and use the mirror.
We’ve all had help at some point. The tallest buildings wouldn’t stand without a solid foundation and a steadfast support system. The journey toward true beauty is no different. In order to feel beautiful, I accessorize. I surround myself with family, friends, anyone who will support me in everything I do. These people, these accessories, enhance beauty and increase self confidence, but if mistreated, they lose their shine. Ellen Degeneres has glamourous jewelry box full of fans, friends, and her wife that make her shine like the star she is. Beautiful people compliment the people around them, enhancing everyone’s beauty. The golden rule defines this behavior as showing kindness to others in the hopes that the kindness
will reciprocate. The realization and adoption of this principle represents one of the most important steps in the process of achieving beauty. Genuine kindness always makes me feel better about myself in addition to boosting someone else’s confidence. Many people have trained themselves to reject negative criticism in order to preserve their confidence, but almost nobody can reject a sincere compliment. Though we’ve never met, Ellen compliments me by helping me
to feel comfortable with myself.
As a middle schooler, I had awful acne and everyone teased me
about it. After a rough day, I came home and cried about it when Ellen showed a picture of her acne from adolescence. It looked worse than mine! I realized that even the best deal with things like acne and that criticisms are only as bad as we make them. Now, after a round of Accutane, I constantly receive compliments about how clear my skin looks.
The most important beauty tip: use the mirror. When I look in the mirror, who do I see? Nobody answers this question the same way, which is what makes it so important. Our differences define us and make the world more interesting. Contrary to this belief, our image of
beauty shows uniformity, despite the detriment to people of all ages, genders, and sizes, who do not fit that description. The mirror should show a unique definition of beauty. Without self confidence,
how can I expect anyone else to see what I cannot? When I look in the mirror, I focus on my defining characteristics and compliment myself until I believe. Every person can shine like Ellen Degeneres. Once internalized, these tips become easy to let out for the world to
see.
