It was about 10 years ago when my family and I decided to move to America. It was a dream come true. Ever since the earthquakes that stroke El Salvador in January of 2001 I wanted nothing more but to move to America. It was the most amazing experience. America was a new country with bigger opportunities for my family and I. I had already planned everything, I would go to school and become a professional. What I had not planned was how I would learn the language. It became a struggle. Up to this day I am still having grammatical problems.
My parents enjoyed every minute of the new land. They loved the sky scrappers and all of the restaurants and malls. They enjoyed spending time with family and learning the new American culture. We enjoyed it so much we became accustomed to their traditions. We lived the life of the rich and famous like we call it. As months went on, we started realizing that the American Dream was tougher than we thought. If you wanted to succeed in this country, you had to work hard and study hard so that one day you could be a professional. My parents started working a lot more, there were times that I didn’t even see them because they were working overtime so that we could survive in the new land. A land of just work, work, work.
As for me I, I studied until I graduated high school. Unfortunately after graduation my education became stomped by the only fact that I was considered an illegal immigrant. A card known as a green card was the only thing stopping me from following my dreams. It was frustrating to know that I was part of the millions of students whose dreams were stopped due to a piece of card. Thank God that I was fortunate enough to have found a lawyer that would help me become a resident of the country I love. After four amazing yet sad moments in El Salvador I finally came back to my country, my beautiful America. I came back with the residence card in my hand and my pride on the other.
Now I am finally going to school to become a Psychologist, my parents are enjoying a good job and living a descent middle class life. My family has fought to have that American Dream. I believe that you can succeed in life if you put your mind into it. My parents had passion about coming to America to live that dream and they have finally found it. I am fortunate to have moved to the country of freedom and liberty. To a country of respect and honor. This country is a country of many opportunities which I am finally obtaining.
