I believe that all of the things that happen to me are based on the choices I make and that I choose the life I lead. I have made a lot of bad decisions throughout the years, but I know that I chose the decisions and must learn from the mistakes. I was first introduced to choice theory during my time at Murray High School, a charter school that is built around Dr. William Glasser’s Choice Theory. The ten Axioms of Choice theory helped me realize I can only change myself and not others. The only way I can change how I feel about something is to change the way I act or think. I have accepted the axioms and use them in my daily life; they help me make better decisions and form better relationships with others.
Unfortunately, there are many people who have not been introduced to choice theory. There are many who believe the things that happen to them are out of their control or are based on luck. A person who came from a bad home life may believe they will never succeed because there was no one there to help them. This way of thinking is upsetting to me because everyone has an equal chance at success; they just have to choose to be successful. Those who wait around for someone to help them or to pull them out of their rut could be waiting forever. It is my choice to be successful in life and to be happy. The only thing I can give to someone else is information, it is then their choice to take that information and use it for their own benefit. When I hear someone say they can’t do something, I tell them that they are choosing not to do something. Our motivation comes from within ourselves not from those around us.
From a young age, I have always wanted to make my own decisions. I want to make choices on how I handle situations, the friends I have, where I work, and how much money I make. I believe the choices I make in life help me grow and learn and become independent. I believe it is important for everyone to understand this theory and take responsibility. I believe that the way I react to events in my life is in my own hands. No one can make me feel a certain way, it is my choice to feel a certain way about something.
