“That’s not Jersey shore, homie that’s the news.” This is a line from the song Word I Never Said by Lupe Fiasco. I am only 15 years old and a junior in high school and already I have been exposed to the media. I believe that the media is corrupt and shows people too much of the bad side of news. This is my belief and you will experience what I have through this piece.
One of the reasons why I believe the news can be corrupt is that just about anyone can report anything they want to the news and they face no consequences about whether or not it’s true. For an example two years ago, one of my good friends, who went to Liberty Commons at the time, got arrested because a kid with cerebral palsy reported to the news that my friend, Bo, was bullying him. My friend is one of the nicest kids I know and he would never do that to anyone let alone someone with cerebral palsy. So since this kid reported this to the news, the news made this a ridiculously huge deal and called the cops and my friend got arrested. They eventually found out that the kid actually asked to be messed around with and stuff. Like for instance my friends one day he asked us to tie his hoodie sleeves together and so we did. It’s not like we had ever hurt him in anyway. We always untied him when he asked us to , we thought we were just having fun with him that’s all. So now that the news didn’t try and get any background on it, my friend now has been portrayed as an asshole all over the news and now colleges will be able to pull up and see that he has been arrested before. Not to mention, celebrities get arrested all of the time.
The main thing about the news that it portrays celebrities so much that people start to see them as like “immortals”. This has to go with the song line I had earlier “that’s not jersey shore”. If a celebrity blows his or her nose, the Kleenex is worth a fortune. But when we here about a celebrity like, Angelina Jolie, when she adopts a kid from overseas then the news makes a huge deal and she’s all over magazines and TV stations. Don’t get me wrong that’s a really great thing that she did but everyday all over the world people are making that kind of commitment and nobody ever hears about them. Are they not good enough for the news because they’ve never been in a popular movie or a TV show?
The news portrays a lot of thins but it is more geared to the bad news and celebrities. It can show people the wrong news and not suffer any consequences for it. I’m not saying that they should completely change the way it’s done but sort of revise it. The media can corrupt what people think in life. This I do believe. Maybe if the news would show the news differently, would people change their views?
