Growing up in a single parent home with my mother being the primary care giver, I never realized the struggles that entailed our lives. I had all the basic necessities needed to survive and never questioned how I got them. My mother worked two jobs to care for my sister and I. As I grew older, I began to realize I admired this strong figure in my life. After going through a bad divorce, my mother had nothing but bills and two babies to raise. My mother always had a strong positive soul. She had a special charisma about her. My mother has worked as a nurse for over 20 years. She always had a positive outlook on life despite the challenges she had to face. Looking up to her, opened my eyes to want to be just like her. She is a survivor. I am currently working as a nurse and have been for over 16 years. My experiences as a nurse has taught me that survival is innate for every species on earth. I have worked with acute, chronic and terminally ill patients of all ethnic groups and socioeconomic status. I have never met any patient who didn’t have the drive to survive. The power to survive has the ability to change peoples lives for the better. Nurses have the capability of bringing hope back into other’s lives. I believe nurses are here for a special purpose, to help others. Helping others is key to helping other’s believe they too can survive.
