Have you ever tried to plan out how everything is going to be? I believe in surprises because, for me, nothing ever turns out as planned. When something comes unexpected it feels like the extra drop when you think the rollercoaster is over. It feels like the extra baseball that gets thrown at you in the batting cages when you try got walk out of your box.

When I was nine years old we decided to move away from our one horse town in Georgia. Since my mom already got a job in Colorado she left with the R.V for a head start. After three months of dealing with the agony of waiting to move so I could start over, see my mom again, and explore the unknown even though I still feared when it would be time to leave my home. When it was time to move away from the remote destination and study the foreign land of Colorado and everything that lies within it.

We decided that I would go on this journey with my grandma so my brother and my father good make some pit stops along the way. My nana and I were having a ball and enjoying the ride like it was the last day we would live. We where exploring new land that looked like it could have been from along time ago; wide open fields and cows everywhere. We where 17 miles from the Colorado line when we got the call; my father was in a terrible four wheeling accident and was in the hospital. Paralyzed in fear we where forced to turn around and head to Tennessee to meet my father lying in the hospital bed like he was broken and could never could be the same.

When my dad drove Craig (my brother) up the hill he said,” Son, this is a ride you will never forget,” But what is sad is that Craig will never forget the day that they both almost died. As they drove up the hill the four-wheeler flipped backward and my dad pushed Craig out of the way. The four-wheeler landed on my dad’s head but if he hadn’t of taken the fall Craig would be dead.

I believe in surprises good or bad because sometimes they act as medicine. My dad made it through but he has many scars and can barely see out of his right eye. I have always wondered what it would be like if that had not happened but then I remember everything happens for a reason, even if you don’t want them to. I believe in surprises because they can change your life, for the good or for the bad.
