Ever since I was young, I’ve always had the utmost respect for the environment. As a lad, I loved being outside and being one with nature. I guess one could say that’s why I care so much about the environment. Fishing has always been one of my greatest passions. It’s almost like a religion to me, and led me to have a greater respect for the environment, especially the waters where I would fish. But unfortunately, not all people in this world are like me. It’s my belief that careless people are one of the main reasons our environment is in its current state. It was an experience I had a few years ago that led me to this belief. As I was camping with my family once, I walked along the sandbank of river looking for a spot to sit in the shade and just relax. It had been a very long drive to get there, and we were all quite exhausted. I stumbled upon a canoe full of drunken middle aged fishermen who all had been smoking. As they drew closer, I noticed that not only had they exceeded their fish limit, but they had tossed their cigarette butts into the river. Although I was fairly young at the time, I knew that pollution was a terrible thing and that these men could have easily just placed their cigarette butts in the trash. I got to thinking that if some people weren’t as careless, the environment would be in a much better shape. Human lifestyle has such a great effect on the environment, and after that experience I felt a desire to make a difference in preserving and protecting it. I believe it’s critical that we become more educated on how to improve the environment, and how we can make our existence less of a strain it. The environment and nature in general are very special to me and it’s where many of my childhood memories come from. It would be such a shame to cheat the lower generations out of being able to enjoy the environment and everything it has to offer like I did as a youngster. If more people could simply learn to respect our environment, and appreciate everything Mother Nature has blessed us with, I believe it would lead to a better overall attitude toward the environment.
