Pound Puppies
Share This Essay:
I have always been a huge animal lover, and as I immerse myself further into the animal rescue world I have come to notice that thousands of the animals that we hold near and dear to our hearts, dog, cats, rabbits, ect. wind up in humane societies, and many of them euthanized because of a lack of space, or need for a pre-used, non-bloodline type animal.
I became a shelter animal fan when my family adopted our now 12 year old pound puppy, Franklin. Even though Franklin may not be a championship wining show dog, he is by far the best dog in the world. 12 years ago my Franklin was sitting on a cement floor of the local humane society, abandoned, unwanted, and unloved, with the rest of his siblings, but being the pound puppy he is he has not had to face many of the negative side effects that come with many of the pure bred breed, whether it is hip dysplasia, heart conditions, hearing or seeing. During the 12 ongoing years of his life the only time he has had to have surgery is after being hit by a car, and he has bounced back very successfully, and even though he is not a pure Labrador or a pure Collie, he has still become the king of the neighbor hood, and is just as good, actually better than all of the other dogs. He now may be a grouchy old dog, but he deserves best, just like all of the other once-homeless animals do because at one point in their lives they faced homelessness, and not having the love and support that an animal needs.
I believe that if every family that is looking for a new best friend right now turns to their local shelter or rescue group, and adopts a homeless animal instead of a purebred animal, many of the unnecessary euthinasias would stop because the percentage of homeless animals would have been decreased dramatically.
I have and I always will believe that a person should save the life of an animal in need, instead of creating the need for a new animal. This is why I believe in adopting pound puppies.
