Back to Basics

These days people are always wanting something newer, bigger, and better. I believe in going back to basics. What I mean by “going back to basics” is that we in America have gotten really spoiled. People always want bigger and better things that they apparently “can’t live without”. I believe that all we need to have are the basic necessities to survive and be happy. If people would do this there would be a lot less animosity and envy towards others. We always try to beat the underdog whether it is with technology, health care, houses, money, etc. It is now to the point where it is ridiculous because some people will go spend millions of dollars on a house, which probably only has a couple people living in it, or hundreds of thousands of dollars on material things that no one truly needs. I do understand that people like to have nice things, as do I, but in the long run they truly don’t matter as much as family, friends, health, happiness, and peace with one another.

I believe that life was more simple and less stressful back in the day compared to now. Everyone gets stressed more easily compared to back when my grandparents were growing up. They didn’t have t.v.’s, iPod’s, cell phones, or fancy cars. They survived on the necessities in life. They lived on farms and milked cows to get milk and had dinner at home every night. They were happy and they didn’t know any different type of life. Although, times were not always good, but they still managed to get through it without causing a lot of drama like we do these days. They made up their own entertainment that was fun and creative. I believe in going back to basics, enjoying life, happiness, and that people should show self-expression.

Somedays I wish we could go back to writing hand written notes rather than zipping through writing an email to someone. Other days, I just feel like sending off an email because it is faster. It doesn’t seem as personalized as something in your own handwriting. Although emails are a faster and cheaper way to send out messages to people around the world, it is just not the same. In addition, many people don’t have the internet, let alone a computer in some countries. This makes America a bit more spoiled because a good 70% percent of people have them and there is a crazy amount of things people can do on them. We have some of the most advanced technology in the world.

Many believe that material things make them happy, but this simply isn’t true. It may give you a warm fuzzy feeling for a short amount of time, but then it disappears. The American people need to take a few moments to think about what truly makes them happy and not about things that they think make them happy. This is what I believe.
