Positively Negative
Share This Essay:
It’s a confusing and corrupted world we live in, filled with death and hatred. To my discomfort, I’ve noticed that way too many people dwell on the negative. Every time I turn on the news, all I hear is what horrible events have taken place recently. “Bridge collapses, seventeen crushed.” or “Airplane crashes, no survivors.” Depressing things of this nature simply saturate today’s media. And quite frankly, I’m sick of it. I’m currently in high school, and there is an informational news program called “Channel One” that airs every morning. Well just the other day, a special segment came on showing all of the major disasters that have occurred in the past ten years. It was utterly depressing. “9/11” being one of the few that really caught my eye, demanded my full attention. As I stared at the screen in a state of nothing less than sadness, anger, and slight repulsion, I realized that it was time for a change. A much overdue change.
The segment ended, and the show resumed it’s usual educational drone. The sting of re-witnessing those horrid events danced through my head like an annoying song, there when you wanted it least. How is it that when something wonderful happens, it almost always gets overlooked? People recognize it at first, but eventually it gets swept away, never to be thought of again. But when something terrible takes place, why, people really grab hold. They latch on as if they’ll die if they don’t suck every ounce of sorrow out of it. To think that death and sorrow take refuge in the minds of more people than happiness and love is a real travesty. It pains me to see so many cling to the negatives in life. Just once I would like to turn on the news and find the news team talking about something positive…something happy.
I’ve not been walking this earth for an exceptionally long time, but in my eighteen years, I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a few people that seem to always find good in every situation. No matter how grim they may seem, they always see something positive. I wish we could all be like that. I know that I’ve definitely strived to take note of the positives in life. Never again will I linger upon the negatives. Nor will I let the sad things in life take root within me. What do I believe? I believe in the belief of the positive.
