This I Believe Essay
March 3, 2008
I believe that I have a purpose.
Through my years at East High school I have encountered many problems, in both my life at home and my life at school, ranging from a bad grade to an argument with my parents. But I never really seem to care. My own problems were and still are my fault and I acknowledge that, allowing me to be indifferent on the subject, but when I see that my friends have problems or issues I am never able to ignore what is happening. This is my purpose, to help my friends when they are in need.
This year, so far, I have once again encountered many problems in my own life, but luckily not nearly as many in the lives of my friends. However, there were still a few problems with their lives that I encountered. On one occasion on of my friends was in an abusive relationship, both emotionally and physically. This person disregarded everything that people around them had been warning them or advising them. But after some time, this person approached me in tears, about the situation that they were in. Over a period of three to four days, I gave all the advice that I could and comforted them when things went from bad to worse. Eventually, with time and patience, this friend listened to what I told them, and amended the problems that they were having.
After this situation occurred I sat around wondering why it was my advice that was able to help resolve their problems. After wondering for a while, I realized that through the years I had helped many different people, in similar situations. Once I realized this, I came to the conclusion that it was my job, no more of a duty, to help my friends and the people around me, no matter what the situation.
Since this occasion I have not let any situation where I could help pass me by. Every time that I help someone I get a feeling of satisfaction, even if it is something as small and as easy as helping them with a homework problem. In doing all of this, I believe that I can affect the lives of those around me, for the better, and possibly even change the world. But on a personal level, it has showed me that everything that I do has a reason. It has shown me that I have a purpose.
