I believe that confidence is a very important trait that everybody should have. Confidence gives you that extra boost to get things done in life that may be harder than usual. Not many people have confidence, they may say they do but they have the wrong kind of confidence. What they have is cockiness.
I am 15 years old, and a 9th grade freshmen in High School. Even though I have only been in school for a couple of months, I all ready have seen many people that are cocky and not confident. And personally I think that more people need to be confident. I play a lot of sports, and I mean a lot of sports. So when you play sports, you interact with a lot of different personalities. And most of those personalities are not good ones; many of them are cocky personalities. And I’m sure most of us have played sports whether it’s competitively or just for fun. But there is always that one kid that is cocky and thinks he’s the best at whatever he does. You may think that being cocky is the same as being confident, but it’s not. Being cocky is when you brag about what you can accomplish, or how many times you did this or that. But being confident is on a completely different level than cockiness. When you’re confident, you believe in yourself that you are going to accomplish something on the next play, or the next pass, whatever it may be. For example, I play quarterback, and if I’m not confident that I’m going to complete a pass or throw a touchdown on the next play, then I’ll probably throw an interception. And if I am confident that I will throw a completion on the next play that will wear off on my teammates. But if I’m cocky then all of my teammates will think that I’m a stuck up player, and as a quarterback I am supposed to be the leader of the team. It also makes a bad impression on all of the adults watching me.
That’s why I believe in confidence more than cockiness. And what’s not helping is that there are professional athletes that show cockiness everyday. When you see Chad Johnson doing one of his touchdown dances in the end zone he is basically rubbing it in his opponents face. But when you see a player like Peyton Manning make a touchdown pass, he just jogs off the field or runs and congratulates his teammates. And when you talk to him at the end of the game, and ask him how what his thoughts are about his play…he’ll say, “I wasn’t worried at all the moment I threw the ball to Reggie Wayne, I had total confidence in him that he would make the catch, and I knew my offensive line was doing a wonderful job blocking up front.” That right there is confidence, not what Chad Johnson and other cocky players show. And that is why I believe in confidence!!!!
