This I Believe

I believe that all elderly should be treated with dignity. I volunteer at an adult day care center and the way some of the participants are treated by there families isn’t right. They are capable of making more decisions than some are allowed to. Yes some are a little more dependent on their families than others are, but their families should at least give them a chance to try and make a few more simple decisions. For instance my great grandmother is getting older and more dependent on her children. But even so, they let her at least attempt to still have some independence. Yes, I am sure eventually she will have to go to a nursing home. But maybe not. Because maybe if we let her continue to make decisions on her own for as long as possible, then her mind will be more capable for a longer period of time. So I believe that even when they are older that they should still be treated with respect and be kept out of nursing homes until they are absolutely necessary.
