This I Believe

I believe in personal honesty and responsibility. For it is by

self-honesty that I begin to be responsibile and by responsibility that

I become free to live as I choose. As Shakespeare said so many years

ago, “To thine own self be true, and it follows as day doth night that

thou canst be false to any man.” The practical application of this is

that I can learn who I am and begin to see what I can become. It also

points out how hard it is to keep alive a lie or deception in all its

forms. So, Shakespeare was correct. After I have begun the exploration

of self-honesty, I find that I become responsible for all my actions. Of

course, this is both good and bad until I fully realize the clarity of

this proposition. I now become free to act in any way I choose just so

long as I accept the responsibility of that action.

Practically speaking, this is often disconcerting to others but, with a

bit of tact, I understand that I need not be brutally honest and need to

take into account the world I live in. I learn that at best I can become

fully human in a world of too many isolated individuals who try to find

their way be clumping together with other isolates in order to form some

sort of identity. While I have not liked all that I have found so far

within me, I am more than pleased and excited when I begin to see the

new person I am becoming when I practice self-honesty and

responsibility.
