This I Believe
Share This Essay:
In looking back on my life, I realize that I have held most strongly to a belief that I have later come to understand by Jungian psychologist James Hillman as the “acorn theory”. Every soul has come into this world to express a unique calling. In this way, the whole world is blessed by everyones’ contribution.
This is not always easy, but I believe it is essential in order to be fulfilled. At times I have attempted pursuits that seemed more lucrative and less confronting, but something deep within my being has railed against such, bringing me back to what I consider to be my true pursuit. For myself it is largely about promoting authentic expression, most especially of youth. It has gotten me in trouble at times, but as another mentor of mine, Michael Meade, suggests, it’s been the right kind of trouble.
I think this is all exemplified very well in Martin Scorce’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’. Sure Jesus may have preferred to live an “ordinary” life, but would his soul have been content with that? Is crucifixion just a precursor for the soul’s ascension? It is such a question I wrestle with as my own seed continues to blossom and reveal its nature.
