This I Believe

This I believe.

This I perceive.

There are people in need.

I want others to heed.

We must give or we’ll grieve.

Some are young. Some are old.

Some are out in the cold.

They try to keep warm.

Each day is a storm

When you don’t fit the mold.

I know a lady named Jane.

Some people say she’s insane.

I believe she is nice

And whatever the price

We should shield her from pain.

Disabled from birth,

She’s the best girl on Earth.

She knows she’s no slob,

‘cause she just got a job.

Do you know what that’s worth?

One thing I can say.

Helping others will pay.

It is what we should do.

I help her. She helps you.

It’s our American way.

This I believe. Our country has developed a network of nonprofit organizations that work to ease suffering, build self-esteem, and strengthen the character of our nation. I believe organized giving and sharing through legitimate nonprofits allows us to multiply the impact of our efforts. These organizations give us the opportunity to ignore our social and political differences and focus on the good we can do when we work together. That is truly the American way.
