My essay is in the form of a song. I was inspired to write the song as I spoke with a friend who was dying of cancer and asking questions about what I believed. You can hear the song by downloading or streaming it from:

www.garageband.com/paul_epstein then clicking on the title, “What Lies Beyond”. Or I can send it to you on CD. The lyrics are below:

What Lies Beyond

©Paul Epstein

What lies beyond, what lies ahead?

What lies above, when we are dead?

I’d like to know before I go.

It’s only fair we’d go somewhere.

Why can’t we see, why can’t we sense?

Reality, keeps us in suspense.

I’d like to have faith, but reason holds me back.

I’d like to believe, but which is the right track?

Chorus: I believe in love, it has power to heal.

I believe there’s more to life than science can reveal.

I believe there’s wisdom in the prophets from the past.

I believe an open heart finds answers at last.

I don’t believe in hell, unless it’s here on Earth,

I’d like to think we get another chance to prove our worth,

But tell me what’s the truth, why we live and why we die.

Why can’t we live in in harmony, eternally, knowing why?

God is just a word for something we can’t know,

Somethin that we hope and pray will be there when we go.

Some folks say they know him or they feel the energy,

But all I know is it makes me sad when a loved one has to leave.

Chorus: I believe in love, it has power to heal.

I believe there’s more to life than science can reveal.

I believe there’s wisdom in the prophets from the past.

I believe an open heart finds answers at last.
